Mr. Stafford, KACC Automotive Technology Instructor has incorporated several tests for his students to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities when it comes to automotive electrical theory.  This type of testing will continue throughout the school year as new skill sets and increased knowledge base are realized.

Today's testing has 5 rotations students must complete - each within 15 minutes.  Students are challenged as they complete the Lab Rotations which include:

Lab 1 - Wire Repair

  •  Soldering wires (Western Union)
  •  Soldering wires (Solder joint of preference)
  •  Tin a wire

Lab 2 - Wire Repair

  • Install a butt connector
  • Install a male connector
  • Install a female connector
  • Install Heat shrink insulation

Lab 3 - Electrical Theory

  • Locate appropriate horn-wiring diagram for 2005 Ford Taurus
  • Color wiring diagram as it follows in a working circuit
    • Red 12+
    • Orange switched 12+
    • Blue Load
    • Yellow Switched ground
    • Green permanent ground

Lab 4 - Ohms Law & Measurement  (One of the most important and basic laws of electrical circuits is Ohm's law, which states the current passing through a conductor is proportional to the voltage over the resistance. Equation.)

  • Measure resistance of 3 components
  • Measure voltage of 3 components
  • Use Ohms Law to calculate the resistance of 2 horns wired parallel in a circuit
  • Each horn is 3.6 Ohms each
    • How Many amps flow at 12.6 volts?
    • How many amps flow at 13.5 volts?

Lab 5 - Electrical Circuit

  • Build an electrical circuit
  • Use a relay to control the load in the circuit
  • Color the diagram as load is working in this circuit

Students will continue to be challenged with these types of tests.  Stay tuned to this website for updates throughout the year.
