Day One of Two-Day Practical Examination
Launch the media gallery 1 playerWhether you are a high school student or an Adult Cosmetology Student, KACC's Cosmetology Program asks a lot from everyone.
This program meets six days per week, yes, six with Saturdays; an additional four weeks in the summer; and, meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings to allow everyone ample opportunity to earn the 1,500 hours mandated by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
Tonya Born, Cosmetology Department Chair, and Gloria Hernandez, Adult Cosmetology Instructor, teamed up to proctor the Illinois State Board Practical Examination for the latest group of students who are wrapping up their education here at the Career Center.
Launch the media gallery 2 playerThe State Board Practical Exam consists of fifteen timed exams. Typically ten are on manikins and five are on a live client. Of course, being the year of COVID-19, all exams were done utilizing manikins.
Students are tested in all major categories: Hair color, Texture, Hairstyling, Haircutting, Nails, and Skin. Students are required to verbally explain to the proctor during each category as they perform the actual procedure on the manikin/client.
Launch the media gallery 3 playerThey also get tested on the knowledge behind each category by being asked questions at random to prove they have mastered both theory and hands on skills they have learned while here at KACC.
The Practical Examination is usually a two-day process. Once they successfully pass the examination and clocked 1500 hours in the program, students are eligible to take the State Theory Licensure examination administered by Continental Testing located in LaGrange, Illinois.
