First Field Trip of the Year

Thank you Kankakee County Coroner's Office

Students enrolled in the Fire-Rescue-EMR program went on their first field trip of the school-year.  Since we are focusing on Emergency Medical Responder curriculum, a visit to the Kankakee County Coroner's Office and Morgue proved itself to be a meaningful experience.  The fine people at the Coroner's Office educated our students on the role the coroner's office plays in recording and when necessary, investigating and determining the cause of death that occurs in Kankakee County.

KACC students realize that as Emergency Medical Responders,  they will be called upon to treat the sick and injured at vehicle crashes and other traumatic incidents.  They now know more about the people they will  encounter from the coroner's office when their is a fatality and have a better understanding of the process.

While at the Bryan Mitchell Forensic Center, the students were given a behind-the-scenes tour which included: viewing the room where pathologists perform autopsies, seeing the refrigerator and freezer where bodies are stored and rooms are used for storage of blood and tissue samples.

KACC is grateful  to Kankakee County Coroner, Robert Gessner, Chief Deputy Coroner Eric Cavender, and Deputy Coroner Mark Posing for conducting the tours and sharing their knowledge and expertise with our students. They certainly developed a newfound appreciation for the work performed by the fine people at the coroner's office.
