Stop The Bleed Training Program Was Awesome!

Students in the Fire-Rescue-EMR program at KACC had the opportunity to received instruction on controlling life-threatening bleeding, called Stop The Bleed.

This Stop the Bleed training was especially great for Mr. Leeson, our instructor, as it was taught by none-other than two KACC Alumni.  Nick Gliwa and Hope Mitton, both of whom are certified instructors of the "Stop the Bleed" course. These two KACC Alumni teamed up to teach to his students.  The course was originally  developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, the National Security Council, and the Department of Defense.

Students learned that the best way to stop any bleeding (including life-threatening hemorrhage) is with direct pressure, along with several other options available to emergency responders when it comes to applying that pressure.

One option is to pack the wound with gauze with hemostatic (blood clotting) agents and use your muscles or body weight to hold pressure on the injury.

A second option is to pack the wound and apply a pressure dressing over the injury.  This method frees the rescuer to go and treat others who may be in need of care.

A third option is to apply a tourniquet above the wound in an effort to compress the blood vessel squeezing off the flow of blood.

Fire-Rescue-EMR students practiced all these options under simulated conditions using artificial arms and legs with imitation blood flowing out of the wounds.

Although sometimes messy, the students really seemed to value the life-like, hands-on practical application of what they were taught.

KACC can't thank instructors Nick Gliwa and Hope Mitton enough for the obvious dedication required to present this class.  Just look at their soiled clothes when class concluded.
